Plus size wedding guest outfits: with a dress, a tunic or the layered look
A wedding is a long day: the ceremony, photos, reception, dinner and often dancing into the night. As a guest you want to look festive and still be able to move freely all day. A dress is not the only solution. In this guide we show you how to dress well as a plus size wedding guest, with a tunic and trousers, with a dress or in the layered look, and which colours are best left to the bride on this day.
What applies to wedding guests?
Before planning your outfit, it is worth taking a look at the invitation. Some couples mention a dress code or a colour theme, others give the venue, which tells you a lot: a celebration in a garden calls for different shoes than a hotel ballroom. Three points almost always apply:
- White belongs to the bride: white, cream and very pale ivory are off limits as the main colour. This also applies to trouser suits and tunics.
- Festive, but not in costume: a fabric with a subtle sheen or a beautiful pattern is enough to look festive. You do not have to dress differently from how you feel comfortable.
- Comfortable for many hours: you stand during the ceremony, sit at dinner and perhaps dance later. Cuts with freedom of movement and an elasticated waist make this easier.
Wedding guest without a dress: tunic and trousers
Many women feel more comfortable in trousers than in a dress. A festive tunic with elegant trousers is a suitable choice for most weddings.
The tunic: fabric with a sheen
Satin looks festive in itself thanks to its subtle shimmer. The elegant satin tunic with V-neck is made of 100 % viscose, has an A-line and 3/4 sleeves and is around 90 cm long. A little more delicate is the viscose satin tunic with floral print in dusky pink, with a round neck and a length of around 85 cm.
If you like lace, the red lace tunic is a special choice. It is cut in an A-line, around 92 cm long and has three rosettes made of the same lace at the front of the hem.
The trousers: elegant and comfortable
A festive tunic goes well with dark trousers that put the top centre stage. The black Marlene trousers with a subtle check have an elasticated waist and are around 94 cm long. Wide Marlene trousers look most harmonious with tunics that are not too long, such as the satin tunics at 85 to 90 cm. Under a longer tunic, slim black trousers are the calmer choice. You can read more about the right trousers in our guide how to style a tunic.
The dress for the wedding
A dress is the easiest solution, because you do not have to combine anything. A balloon skirt gives you plenty of freedom of movement, even when dancing.
- The jersey viscose dress with balloon skirt and flowers has a cheerful floral print, short sleeves and two pockets. It is cut in an A-line and is around 100 cm long.
- The mint green jersey dress with balloon skirt combines soft jersey with a swinging balloon skirt in check taffeta. It has two pockets and is around 104 cm long.
Both dresses have short sleeves. For church or the evening, a light layer for your shoulders is practical. You can find all dresses in our dress collection.
The layered look at a wedding
The layered look works well for a wedding, because you can take off a layer when it gets warm during the celebration. Two ideas:
- A sheer layer over black: the black chiffon tunic with red poppy is sheer, oversized, open at the sides and around 75 cm long. It is worn as a layer over a simple top. With black trousers underneath, this creates a festive outfit in which the poppy provides the accent.
- Overdress over a tunic or blouse: the sleeveless black linen overdress in 100 % linen is cut in an A-line, has a V-neck and four patch pockets and is around 118 cm long. A coloured blouse or tunic underneath shows its colour on the arms.
At many weddings today, black is no longer a problem. If you are unsure, add a coloured piece or ask the couple.
Three outfits to recreate
- Without a dress, classic: satin tunic with V-neck, black Marlene trousers with check and shoes with a flat heel.
- With a dress: jersey viscose dress with balloon skirt and flowers, plus a light layer for your shoulders during the ceremony.
- In the layered look: simple black top, chiffon tunic with red poppy and slim black trousers.
Which size fits?
According to our size chart, size 1 is intended for German dress sizes 44 to 52 (hip measurement 120 to 146 cm) and size 2 for 54 to 60 (hip measurement 146 to 160 cm). Frequently asked questions about wedding guest outfits
What should I wear as a wedding guest if I do not like dresses?
A festive tunic in satin or lace with elegant dark trousers is a suitable alternative. What matters is a fabric with sheen or texture and a cut in which you feel comfortable all day.
Can you wear the layered look to a wedding?
Yes. A sheer tunic over a top or an overdress over a blouse looks festive and can be adjusted when it gets warm.
Which colours should wedding guests avoid?
White, cream and very pale ivory are reserved for the bride. If the invitation mentions a colour theme or dress code, follow it.
Can guests wear black?
At many weddings, yes, especially combined with a colour or a pattern. If you are unsure, ask the couple.
