Cuts that skim: clothes that feel comfortable around the tummy
Many women know the feeling: a top looks good on the hanger, but it clings around the tummy, pulls when you sit down or keeps riding up. Whether you feel comfortable in a garment depends above all on the cut. In this guide we explain which cuts skim the body instead of restricting it, which lengths and fabrics help and how to put together comfortable outfits from them. This is not about hiding anything, but about freedom of movement and a calm line.
Why the cut matters more than the size
Two garments in the same size can feel completely different. If a top fits closely at the waist, it traces every movement and presses when you sit. If the fabric falls loosely from the bust or shoulder, however, there is some room between fabric and body. This ease makes a garment comfortable. That is why many of our styles are cut in an A-line or balloon shape.
The A-line: narrow at the top, wider below
With an A-line, the garment sits at the shoulders and widens evenly towards the hem. The fabric therefore does not cling to the tummy but falls loosely over it. One example is the viscose tunic with two pockets: A-line, V-neck, 3/4 sleeves and a length of around 90 cm. The soft viscose gives it a flowing drape, and the V-neck adds a vertical line that draws the eye upwards. The principle works the same way for dresses. The beige linen dress with all-over print, made of a viscose and linen blend, is cut in an A-line, has a V-neck and two pockets and is around 126 cm long.
The balloon shape: plenty of room in the middle
With a balloon shape, the skirt is cut wide and narrows slightly again towards the hem. This creates plenty of room around the middle, while the garment still has a clear finish at the bottom. The jersey viscose dress with balloon skirt combines an A-line with a balloon skirt. It has short sleeves, a round neck and two pockets and is around 100 cm long.
If you prefer a tunic and trousers, you will find the balloon shape there too. The black linen tunic with balloon skirt is made of 100 % linen, has two patch pockets and is around 90 cm long. Slightly longer is the long black jersey tunic with a balloon-shaped skirt, short sleeves and two pockets. At around 105 cm it reaches over the thighs.
Empire line and H-line
With an empire line, a seam sits directly below the bust, and below it the fabric falls wide. This leaves the tummy free and emphasises the narrowest point of the upper body. If you like this effect, look for a seam below the bust when shopping.
The H-line is cut straight. The garment is roughly the same width at the shoulders, tummy and hem. It looks understated and suits women who do not like flared shapes. The beige linen tunic with two pockets is cut in an H-line, has a V-neck and side slits and is around 78 cm long. The side slits give you extra freedom of movement when sitting and walking.
The right length
The length decides where the line of an outfit ends. A top that stops exactly at the widest point of the tummy or hips creates a horizontal edge there. If it ends clearly below, for example at the thigh, the outfit looks calmer and longer. How to find your preferred length before ordering is described in our guide How to style a tunic.
Angled hems
A handkerchief hem or an asymmetric hem does not have a straight edge. The line runs downwards at the sides and therefore looks softer than a straight finish. The floral print tunic with handkerchief hem, made of a light viscose and linen blend, is cut in an A-line and has a V-neck, 3/4 sleeves and two pockets. It is around 89 cm long.
Fabrics with drape
Even the best cut does little if the fabric stands away stiffly. For clothes that skim the body, fabrics with a soft drape are ideal:
- Viscose: flowing and light. It falls loosely instead of clinging to the body.
- Jersey: a stretchy knitted fabric that moves with you. A small share of elastane helps it keep its shape.
- Linen and linen blends: airy and slightly firmer. A blend with viscose usually drapes more softly than pure linen.
You will find the exact material composition of each style on the product page. More styles are available in our tunic collection and among our dresses.
Three outfits to recreate
- For every day: A-line viscose tunic with two pockets, slim black trousers and flat shoes.
- For an invitation: jersey viscose dress with balloon skirt and simple ballet flats or sandals.
- Straight and airy: beige H-line linen tunic over slim trousers and a long necklace.

Frequently asked questions about cuts for the tummy
Which clothes are comfortable to wear around the tummy?
Cuts that do not cling to the tummy are comfortable: A-line, balloon shape and empire line. Fabrics with a soft drape such as viscose and jersey go well with them, as do trousers with an elastic waistband.
How can I draw less attention to my tummy?
More important than any trick is that nothing pulls. A top that falls loosely and ends clearly below the tummy and hips looks calm. A V-neck also draws the eye upwards.
Do loose cuts not add bulk?
That depends on the fabric and the combination. Soft, flowing fabrics add less bulk than stiff ones. Slim trousers or leggings go well with a loose top, which keeps the outfit balanced.
What is the difference between an A-line and a balloon shape?
An A-line widens evenly from top to bottom. A balloon shape is widest in the middle and narrows slightly again towards the hem.
