From our atelier: plus size designer fashion from Berlin

Luba Moden is not a large corporation but a designer with her own atelier. Lubow Otto has been designing plus size womenswear since 1994, and since 2010 she has been doing so in Berlin. In this article we introduce the label: who designs the clothes, where the name comes from, which basic concept lies behind it and the details by which you can recognise the signature of our collection.

Who is behind Luba Moden

The designer and owner of Luba Moden is Lubow Otto. She is a trained dressmaker and has been creating the brand in her own atelier since 1994. Craftsmanship is therefore where the label began: anyone who sews herself knows from practice what a cut, a fabric and a seam can do.

The name of the label is personal. “Luba“ is the pet form of her first name and means “love“ in Russian. Lubow Otto describes her path like this: “I came to Germany for love. With love, I try to dress women in plus sizes beautifully as well.“

From Ratingen to Berlin

In its early years, Luba Moden had its headquarters in Ratingen and a showroom in the Imotex fashion centre. Since 2010 the label has been based in Berlin. Today the atelier, showroom and office are all under one roof at Riehlstraße 11, 14057 Berlin. If you are looking for plus size fashion from Berlin, this is a label with its own atelier in the city.

The basic concept: fabric, workmanship, small runs

The basic concept of Luba Moden can be summed up in four points:

  • Exclusive fabrics: jacquard, viscose jersey, satin, linen or bouclé, depending on the style and its purpose.
  • High-quality workmanship: care in cut and details, from the collar to the pocket.
  • Fashionable design in limited editions: the styles are not made in large series.
  • Production in our own atelier: design and production are in one pair of hands.

What the limited edition means for you: a style is not available indefinitely. You can see which sizes are currently available on the respective product page.

Details by which you can recognise our signature

Asymmetry at the collar and hem

A recurring design element is the play with asymmetry at necklines, sleeves or pockets. The red tunic with faux leather details has a large asymmetric collar and faux leather stripes on the pockets. It is around 92 cm long and cut in an A-line. On the mustard roll-neck jumper the roll neck is worked asymmetrically, combined with a dropped shoulder and side slits for freedom of movement. The hem can pick up the theme as well: the black and grey pinstripe jersey tunic has an asymmetric high-low hem and 3/4 sleeves.

Buttons as jewellery

Hand-picked buttons made of natural materials such as horn, coconut or shell are part of the basic concept. One example is the light grey jacquard tunic with V-neck: its decorative button is made of water buffalo horn, and the jacquard has a cable-pattern texture. The melange jacket in sand fastens with three decorative wooden buttons. Its hem is slightly asymmetric and around four centimetres longer at the back than at the front.

Collars and contrasting materials

A special collar changes the effect of a simple top. The black jersey tunic with red taffeta collar combines soft viscose jersey with taffeta at the collar and on the decorative stripes of the pockets. The viscose tunic with organza flower collar looks more delicate and also has a handkerchief hem and 3/4 sleeves. You can see more styles in our tunic collection.

What makes plus size designer fashion

For us, plus size designer fashion means an original design that is intended for plus sizes from the very beginning. Our cuts are loose, often in an A-line or H-line, and leave room for freedom of movement. The details sit where the eye should go: at the collar, on the pockets, at the hem. On every product page you will find the length and the material composition, so you can compare before ordering.

Which size fits?

Most of our styles come in two sizes. According to our size chart, size 1 is intended for German dress sizes 44 to 52 (hip circumference 120 to 146 cm) and size 2 for dress sizes 54 to 60 (hip circumference 146 to 160 cm). If you have questions about a style, you can reach us by phone at +49 (0) 30 – 30 20 26 37 or by email at info@lubamoden.de.
