Size 1 or size 2? How to find your size at Luba Moden
At Luba Moden you will not find a long row of dress sizes, but two sizes: size 1 and size 2. This makes choosing easier, but it often raises questions the first time you order. Which size is right if you normally wear a 50 or a 54? What about XL and XXL? And why is there a length given for every style? In this guide we explain how our size system works, how to measure your hips correctly and how a tape measure lets you see before ordering how a piece will fit you.
Two sizes instead of many: how our system works
Our cuts are deliberately loose. That is why each size covers a whole range of dress sizes. According to our size chart:
- Size 1: for German dress sizes 44 to 52, which corresponds to a hip measurement of 120 to 146 cm.
- Size 2: for German dress sizes 54 to 60, which corresponds to a hip measurement of 146 to 160 cm.
The hip measurement is what matters most. With loose tunics, dresses and trousers, it is the measurement that tells you most reliably how something will fit. Most of our styles are available in both sizes. You can see which sizes are in stock directly on the product page.
Measuring your hips correctly
All you need is a soft tape measure and ideally a mirror. This is how to do it:
- Stand up straight with your feet together.
- Place the tape measure around the widest part of your hips and bottom. This point is usually a little lower than you might think.
- Check in the mirror that the tape runs horizontally all the way round and does not slip down at the back.
- The tape should sit loosely without pulling in. Read off the value and write it down.
The measurement is most accurate over light underwear or thin leggings. It is worth measuring twice and taking the larger value if they differ.
Size 52, size 54 and letter sizes
Many women know their size as a letter size. In our size chart, size 1 is labelled XL and size 2 XXL. However, letter sizes are not standardised, and an XXL from another shop may fit differently from ours. It is therefore best to rely on your hip measurement. This way a size label from another shop does not lead to the wrong order.
Your usual dress size is a good starting point: if you mostly wear 44 to 52, you will usually be a size 1, and if you wear 54 to 60, a size 2. If your measured hips do not match this, go by the tape measure.
Why length matters just as much
With loose cuts, the length often shapes the overall impression more than the width. That is why our product pages give an approximate length for our styles. A few examples show how much this can vary:
- The short red lace tunic with a straight H-line cut is around 59 cm long and is often worn over a longer dress or top.
- The short black cotton tunic with long sleeves measures around 80 cm.
- The airy grey cotton tunic with two pockets sits in the middle at around 89 cm.
- The long viscose tunic with all-over print is around 105 cm long.
- The calf-length jersey dress in blue with a back slit measures around 126 cm.
How to compare: lay a top or dress you like flat and measure from the highest point of the shoulder to the hem. If the length on the product page is close to your value, the new piece will end in a similar place. If it is clearly larger, it will be longer. You can read how to choose a tunic to go with your trousers in our guide how to style a tunic.
Loose cuts and waistbands: what this means for the fit
Many of our tops and dresses are cut in an A-line. They widen towards the hem and skim the hips without clinging. Straight H-line cuts fall vertically from the shoulder. In both cases you keep your freedom of movement, even when sitting.
With trousers, an elasticated waistband helps. The viscose trousers with wide cuffs have an elasticated waist and are around 98 cm long. The viscose trousers with stretch waistband have a waistband that stretches all round, a loose cut through the leg and an elasticated finish at the hem. Waistbands like these adapt to you and make choosing a size less complicated. You can find more styles in our trousers collection and in the tunic collection.
If you are right on the boundary
A hip measurement of around 146 cm lies exactly between size 1 and size 2. Here it helps to ask yourself how you prefer to wear your clothes. If you like things a little looser, the larger size is often more comfortable. If you are unsure, we are happy to advise you personally. Frequently asked questions about sizing
Is a size 52 an XL or an XXL?
At Luba Moden, a German size 52 belongs to size 1, which our size chart labels XL. Other manufacturers sometimes assign letter sizes differently. Your hip measurement is more reliable than any letter size: size 1 is intended for 120 to 146 cm.
What is a size 54 in letter sizes?
With us, German dress size 54 belongs to size 2, which our size chart labels XXL. It is intended for a hip measurement of 146 to 160 cm.
How do women measure their hips?
Stand up straight with your feet together and place a soft tape measure horizontally around the widest part of your hips and bottom. The tape should sit loosely without pulling in.
Do the styles run large or small?
Our cuts are loose, which is why each size covers several dress sizes. Go by your hip measurement and also compare the length with a garment that fits you well.
