Plus size fashion over 50: what looks good, without any rules

If you search for fashion over 50, you will quickly find lists of things that women of this age supposedly should no longer wear: no bold colours, no short sleeves, no patterns. We see it differently. Looking good has little to do with the year you were born and a lot to do with whether clothes fit well, feel comfortable and suit your personality. In this guide we show what really matters in plus size fashion over 50: quality, details, colour and cuts with freedom of movement.

Why we do not believe in lists of rules

Rules such as “only muted colours after 50” assume that all women are the same. That is not true. Some have preferred black for decades, others are just discovering the joy of red or petrol. Both are right. More helpful than rules are three points to look out for when shopping:

  • The fabric feels comfortable on your skin.
  • You can move freely in it, standing as well as sitting.
  • The piece goes with what is already in your wardrobe.

If that is the case, the garment is a good choice, no matter how old you are.

Quality: fabrics that feel good

Over the years, many women pay more attention to how a fabric feels on the skin. Natural and flowing materials are a good foundation.

Cotton

Cotton is kind to the skin and pleasantly light. The red cotton tunic with broderie anglaise is made of 100 % cotton, cut in an A-line and has 3/4 flounce sleeves. At around 88 cm long, it ends at the thigh. The fine broderie anglaise turns a comfortable top into a piece with character.

Viscose satin

Satin made of viscose has a soft sheen and drapes softly. The viscose satin tunic with floral print in petrol is made of 100 % viscose, has a round neck and 3/4 sleeves and is around 85 cm long. It suits everyday life as well as special occasions.

You will find the exact material composition of each style on the product page.

Details make the difference

A simple cut looks high quality when one detail makes it special. This can be a collar, a hem or a touch of colour. Such details give an outfit personality without you having to do much combining.

  • A special collar: The viscose tunic with organza flower collar has a delicate organza collar, a handkerchief hem, 3/4 sleeves and two pockets. It is around 90 cm long.
  • A touch of colour: The black jersey tunic with red taffeta collar also has red decorative taffeta stripes on both pockets. It is around 92 cm long. The red only shows in a few places, which makes it all the more striking.
  • Pockets: Many of our styles have pockets. This is practical and gives a top or dress a relaxed note.

Colour: whatever you like

There is no colour that is forbidden from a certain age. What matters is whether you like a colour and feel comfortable in it. Colours close to the face, in tops, collars and scarves, have the greatest effect. If you are unsure, start with one colour in one piece and combine it with black, grey or white. If you like patterns, you can wear them just as you did at 30. A proven rule: pattern on top, plain below.

Cuts with freedom of movement

Good clothes fit without restricting you. Loose cuts in flowing fabrics offer freedom of movement and still look polished. The calf-length jersey dress in blue, made of soft viscose jersey, is cut loose and has a round neck and short sleeves. At around 126 cm it reaches the calf, and a slit at the back hem makes walking easier.

A light jacket as a second layer

If you prefer to keep your arms covered, wear a light jacket over it. The black and white cotton jacket with dots is made of 100 % cotton, cut in a slight A-line and around 80 cm long. It has no collar, a single-button fastening and two pockets. Worn over a dress or tunic, it creates a complete outfit.

The right trousers

Trousers with an elastic waistband that fit comfortably and drape softly go well with tunics. The viscose trousers with wide cuffs are around 98 cm long and made of a blend of polyester and viscose. You will find more ideas for combinations in our guide How to style a tunic.

Three outfits to recreate

  1. With colour: red cotton tunic with broderie anglaise, viscose trousers with wide cuffs and flat shoes.
  2. For a special occasion: viscose satin tunic in petrol, slim black trousers and a simple necklace.
  3. One dress, two layers: calf-length jersey dress in blue with the black and white cotton jacket on top.

Which size fits?

Our cuts are loose. Size 1 is intended for German dress sizes 44 to 52 (hip circumference 120 to 146 cm), size 2 for 54 to 60 (hip circumference 146 to 160 cm). Frequently asked questions about fashion over 50

What do women over 50 wear?

Whatever they like and whatever fits well. Comfortable fabrics such as cotton, viscose and jersey, cuts with freedom of movement and one detail that makes an outfit special, such as a beautiful collar or a colour, have proven themselves.

What should women over 50 no longer wear?

We do not believe in such rules. A garment is not right if it pinches, pulls or does not feel like you. That has nothing to do with age.

Which colours suit women over 50?

All colours in which you feel comfortable. Strong shades such as red or petrol look fresh close to the face, while black and grey are a calm base that any colour can be combined with.

Can women over 50 wear patterns?

Yes. Patterns such as flowers, dots or stripes look calm when combined with plain pieces, for example a patterned top with black trousers.
